Movies with spy agent micheal astin3/20/2023 Matthew and Jane made many nods to Palmer in the movie, from the Michael Caine glasses as worn by all the agents to, of course, Sir Michael himself." Mark Miller described The Ipcress File (1965) as a "huge inspiration and you'll recognise it as an influence if you read the comic-book, this idea of a working-class spy operating in a traditionally glamorous setting. Colin Firth plays the titular "Harry" (Harry Hart), the film is based on the comic book The Secret Service created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. This time as "Arthur" (after all Harry wasn't his real name) the bespectacled head of a secret espionage unit. Michael Caine returns as a secret agent in Kingsman: The Secret Service. It could be argued that since Blue Ice wasn't based on a Len Deighton novel that it's not Palmer but then none of the following Palmer movies were based on Deightons novels either. However, the ambiguity this creates between the two versions, while coincidental, is in keeping with the nature of the character and Deighton's theme of agents losing sight of their original lives.Īccording to the credits for Blue Ice (1992), the character of "Harry Anders" is based on the Ted Allbeury character "Tad Anders." However his first name was changed to Harry due to Caines popular indentification with "Harry Palmer", the characters share many similarities and its not hard to imagine "Anders" as merely an alias used in retirement. This coincidentally meshed with the protagonist in the books being referred to as "Harry" by another character, although he clearly states this is not his real name. The production team needed a name for the previously anonymous secret agent and chose "Harry Palmer", because they wanted a dull, unglamorous name to distance him from Ian Fleming's James Bond. Harry Palmer played by Michael Caine is the protagonist of a number of films based on the unnamed main character from the spy novels written by Len Deighton.
